John Aprea, Actor in 'The Godfather Part II,' Dies at 83

John Aprea, an actor best known for his role as the young Salvatore Tessio in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather Part II," has died at the age of 83.

Aprea was born on March 4, 1941, in Englewood, New Jersey. He began his acting career in the early 1970s, appearing in small roles in films such as "The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight" (1971) and "The Valachi Papers" (1972). In 1974, Aprea landed the role of the young Salvatore Tessio in "The Godfather Part II." His performance in the film was widely praised, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. After "The Godfather Part II," Aprea continued to work steadily in film and television. He appeared in such films as "Rocky" (1976), "The Godfather Part III" (1990), and "Donnie Brasco" (1997). He also had recurring roles on television series such as "The Sopranos" and "Oz." In a 2012 interview, Aprea said that his greatest career accomplishment was playing the young Salvatore Tessio. "It was a dream come true," he said. "I had always wanted to be an actor, and to play such an iconic role in such an iconic film was an incredible experience." Aprea died on August 15, 2024, at his home in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Christine, and two children.
