Laurie Hernandez: Olympic Gold Medalist
A New Generation of Athletes
New Jersey-born Hernandez was one of the first generation of athletes born in the 21st century to win an Olympic gold medal just under a month after her 16th birthday. She competed in the women's qualification at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she helped the U.S. team win the gold medal in the team competition.
A Rising Star
Hernandez's performance at the Olympics captured the attention of the world. She was a key member of the "Fierce Five," the U.S. women's gymnastics team that won the gold medal in Rio de Janeiro. Hernandez was the first competitor on vault and floor exercise for the USA team, and she contributed to the overall score with 15.100 on vault and 15.233 on beam.
